Explore Axarquia

This package is ideal for people who would like to explore a larger area on foot without being bothered by your luggage.

The first two nights you stay in Alfarnatejo, a village with around 400 residents in the northeast of the Axarquia region. The area around this village is also known as “the southern Pyrenees”. This is because the mountains around offer a beautiful view of the surroundings.

You can choose here the first days from various, spectacular hiking trails that this area is rich with.

The real hike starts the third day with a brisk walk along Riogordo. Via the Rio Cueva river to the hamlet of Huerta de Ranea where you will spend the night in a comfortable bed and breakfast. The next day a beautiful walk is planned in the area.

On the fifth day you continue the hike to Finca Serrato through the Montés de Malaga Natural Park. You will stay here for three days so that you can also thoroughly explore this area.

The program

Day 1.

A warm welcome at bed and breakfast “El Aguila Libre” is the starting point of an incredible week. (more information about transport to B&B)

You can choose to spend your first day in Spain in peace and enjoy the comfort of “El Aguila Libre” after your trip.

Or choose to fly in immediately with a walk-in walk in the area. Sufficient information and walking maps are available from which you can choose the walk that appeals to you the most.

Day 2.

The local walk on day two takes you to the top of two (out of three) mountains that give this region its nickname. You climb the Alto de Fraile, which has a height of 1222 m, to see the beauty of nature. The vistas that you see here are priceless.

The Dona ana has a height of 1202 m. The beauty of nature that you experience around you during these climbs makes it more than worth doing. This tour takes 4 to 5 hours.

You are here in the middle of the habitat of the mountain goat. So don’t make a difference if you cross a few during your trip.

The second overnight stay is again planned at El Aguila Libre.

Day 3.

You start the actual trek to the next sleeping place on the third day. You walk through unspoilt nature past the village of Riogordo and the river Rio Cueva to the hamlet of Huerta de Ranea.

Here you will be welcomed at bed and breakfast Casa Grenadina, the second place to stay on this trip.

Don’t worry about your luggage, it will be brought to you from El Aguila Libre to Casa Grenadina. So you can fully enjoy the beautiful fauna and flora that you can admire en route.

Of course you spend the night in bed and breakfast Casa Grenadina.

Day 4.

To recover from the first day of trekking, keep it a bit quieter today.

A hike in the area is planned that will last between four and five hours. The area around Huerta de Ranea is the perfect place for nature lovers.

You will once again enjoy a good night’s sleep at Casa Grenadina.

Day 5.

Now that you have been able to take it easy for a day, you are definitely ready to continue the trek towards Finca Serrato.

The route runs along and through the Montés de Malaga Natural Park, right through areas rich in wild almond trees and olive trees. While walking, you will pass Comares, a traditional Andalusian settlement. You will never forget the views that are presented here.

While you walk to Finca Serrato, your luggage is transferred by us from Casa Grenadina, so you don’t have to carry it around.

At Finca Serrato you will certainly find a welcome drink and a tapa!

Day 6.

At Finca Serrato we always start the day with a healthy and fresh, extensive breakfast to start the day well.

The hike planned for this day starts at the finca. The first part leads you to the rio seco (dry river) El Rute. From there you go up on another side to reach the ruins of Lagar El Rute, an old press shop.

The route then goes to the Montés de Malaga Natural Park, after which you arrive at Venta De la Nada. You will find it a little more typical than this place. You think you are certainly 70 years back in time, an experience that you do not want to miss. If desired, you can have lunch here.

After lunch you walk back to Finca Serrato via a completely different route.

This walk takes six to seven hours (without lunch).

Day 7.

Of course, a decent breakfast cannot be missed on holiday, so take your time to have breakfast.

Once satisfied, one of us will take you to a starting point in the Montés de Malaga Natural Park. 10 different walking routes have been plotted from that point. It is great that these routes can be combined with each other. This way you decide for yourself how long you walk or how hard you walk.

All routes contain a few places where you can look so far that you imagine yourself alone in the world. Enthusiasts of photography can fully carry out their passion here.

After the walk you will be picked up again at an agreed point and time. Don’t panic, we are always available if unexpected changes occur.

You decide the duration of this walk yourself.
