In the “Discover Competa” package you stay four nights in the artists’ village of Competa. Here you will be immersed in the real Spanish lifestyle. The cozy village offers a diverse range of places that you do not want to miss. An aperitif on one of the typical terraces, a lunch in the local tapas bar, or dinner in the restaurant of an abuela (grandma), Competa has it all.
The interesting thing about Competa is that the village borders on the Parque Natural de las Sierras Almijara y Tejeda, which makes it an ideal place for walkers and nature lovers. With Competa as a starting point you can enjoy a very varied walking experience.
You stay in an authentic restored village house in the middle of the center, near the church and the central square. This way you are within walking distance of the atmospheric restaurant on and around the square. You have breakfast (included) here every morning on one of the terraces as the real Spaniards regularly do.
The package then goes to Comares. This village is a Moorish settlement on the top of a mountain. Here you can enjoy the overwhelming views of the Axarquia region and the coast. On clear days you can even see ‘in’ Morocco.
You decide how much time you spend in Comares, since you walk to your next place of residence. You will stay for another four nights in Finca Serrato.
This wine press, more than 200 years old, is situated on a private estate of five hectares in the middle of the beautiful Andalusian nature. In addition, the estate borders the Parque Natural Montés de Malaga nature reserve. Various beautiful walks have been plotted from here. You can even walk to the coast if desired.
Finca Serrato provides spacious rooms and a nice breakfast, which is served on the patio in sunny weather.
You arrive in Competa and you will be warmly welcomed in Casa Hadriano. Take your time to move into the spacious double room, there are no specific things planned for your first day.
You can determine the details of your first day yourself. Do you prefer a day of rest after the tiring journey? No problem, you can stroll through the village or simply enjoy the comfort of Casa Hadriano.
Do you prefer a small walk-in walk? You have several walks in the area, ranging from one hour to three hours.
To get the week off to a good start, start on Day 2 with a nature walk in the Sierras Almijara y Tejeda Nature Park. You can determine here how hard or how long you take the walk. There are several route descriptions for various walks.
The nature park is just over 40 hectares full of pine trees and pines. Due to an abundance of marble, the region is dominated by white and gray tones. One of the largest groups of Iberian ibex lives in this park.
You can dine on the pleasant village square near Casa Hadriano.
On day three you start the brisk walks of the package.
The walk starts at a former hydroelectric power plant in the middle of the Sierras Almijara y Tejeda nature park. Transport to that point is arranged for you. From there you can walk back via different routes to the center of Competa. The shortest walk to return takes around four hours. You will receive a lot of information so that you can choose the longer routes if this is not sufficient for you.
Don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful nature and the deafening silence that you experience during this walk. Unspoiled nature as you cross it here is becoming increasingly scarce.
A typical Spanish dinner on one of the terraces provides a conclusion to another beautiful day.
Day 4 begins with a transfer to Puerto del Collado, a famous point at 890 m altitude that offers incredible vistas. You will get an overview of (almost) the entire walk here.
From this exceptional place you walk to the “lost village” of Albuchal. This village got this stamp of “lost” because it suffered years hard under a guerrilla war. At a certain moment nobody lived anymore.
Until Antonio “El Zumbo” returned to the village and there are, now very successful, restaurant “El Albuchal” to start. This was the starting signal to breathe new life into this village. You will be amazed where they are now.
The restaurant (and Antonio) are still active, definitely recommended to visit! If you are going to do this, make sure you have cash with you. It is not possible to pay electronically at El Albuchal.
With a well-filled stomach you walk back through nature to Competa.
The walk itself (without lunch or other visits) takes at least six hours.
Time to say goodbye to Competa and start the second part of the journey.
One of us brings you to Comares, a traditional settlement on the top of a mountain. Here you will be treated to the most magnificent views of the Axarquia region and the coast.
