Cycling package “Cross Axarquia” is the perfect trip for those who want to explore a large part of the beautiful Axarquia without the burden of luggage.
The first part of the trip you stay in bed and breakfast “El Aguila Libre” in Alfarnatejo. This region is also known as the southern Pyrenees and has a large network of paved and unpaved paths. What makes it a paradise for cyclists.
The actual hike starts on day 4. This beautiful route goes along the town of Riogordo and takes you to the overwhelming nature of the Montés de Malaga nature park.
This area also offers a wide range of cycle routes for every kind of cyclist. From easy, quiet routes to adventurous, challenging courses.
You will be warmly welcomed at bed and breakfast “El Aguila Libre” where you will have the opportunity to recover from your trip. Once you are settled in your room, you prepare the bikes together with the managers.
Depending on the time of arrival, this first mountain bike day still offers time to ride the first – to be discussed – route. You are in a fairly rough area at an altitude of around 900 meters, so there are various exciting options.
You drive from the town of Alfarnate on a dirt road to an asphalt descent over a mountain pass. Important tip: Do not take the hairpin bends too quickly! There are often sheep, goats and their shepherds on the road around the corner.
You continue your way to Ventas de Zafarrayas on the GR7, an old railway line, one of the oldest cycling and walking routes in Spain. This route takes you to various hidden places in the middle of nature where absolute peace still prevails.
You will spend the night again in “El Aguila Libre”.
You depart north of Alfarnatejo on a wide sandy path along farmland. There you rise to a height of around 1,300 meters on Mount El Chamizo. The road to it goes wonderfully smoothly and you pass a small waterfall.
Then comes the climb. This is steep but with a nice sandy surface. The descent to El Aguila Libre is quite technical and rocky, but a pleasure after the tough climb.
Fit mountain bikers can extend the tour with a climb of the Pico Vilo, which offers fantastic views over the steep rock walls in the area.
Here you start the ride towards Finca Serrato. We transfer your luggage from “El Aguila Libre” to “Finca Serrato”.
From El Aguila Libre you descend on a somewhat technical path towards a green valley to reach the town of Riogordo. This is one of the cozy pueblos blancos where you can have a nice cup of coffee or a refreshment. From here you climb a few hundred meters of asphalt and then end up in the town of Colmenar. Then you dive into the Montes de Málaga National Park where you visit the northern part.
B&B Finca Serrato is the end point of this day where you will be warmly welcomed with a free drink and snack.
You start the day with a healthy and fresh breakfast at Finca Serrato so that you can continue the day energetically.
Today’s route runs from Finca Serrato over asphalt to the next pueblo blanco; Comares. This strategically located old Moorish fortress overlooking the Mediterranean Sea is one of the typical white villages that makes the region so famous.
Follow the blue footprints here to the places with the most beautiful view of the Mediterranean sea and the Sierra Nevada. After this you will drive back over a few single tracks and sandy paths to Finca Serrato. With a final tough climb to end the day well.
This is a route of approximately 30 kilometers.
As usual, you start the day with a rich breakfast at Finca Serrato.
From Finca Serrato you bridge the 270 meters of altitude to the main road (A7000) from where you dive into the Montes de Málaga National Park a little further south. A wide gravel path (without any buildings) leads you to a little used single track that winds down.
After a few river crossings you will arrive in the famous Colmenar. The steep streets to the church are rewarded with a beautiful view towards the Sierra Nevada. From here you follow different sandy paths along farms and olive groves. You get to know the hills in the surroundings of Finca Serrato, because when you see your accommodation there are a few more vigorous climbs before you arrive there.
After a long asphalt fall, dive back into the Montes de Málaga National Park in the south. Along the way you will definitely cross “fellow” cyclists as this is a very popular cycling area.
The hard surface on the single tracks invite you to ride fast, followed by a long climb and you have more eye for the natural beauty and tranquility around you.
The 4 kilometer sand path descent to Finca Serrato is now known and your brakes will be tested.
The route of day 8 is focused on speed. You descend on quiet forest trails from Montes de Málaga to Ecomuseo, located in the park. You will pass some viewpoints with great views of Malaga and the rest of the national park that you should not miss.
Along the way you will pass Fuente de la Reina with 1,032 meters the highest point of the park.
You can of course also choose to keep your last day calm before you go back home.
Goodbye and departure at Finca Serrato.
