Birding Tour Andalusia

21 – 25 april 2022

Join us on a birding tour with bird guide Louis van Oort to the heart of Andalusia for an unforgettable experience!

You wake up in the beautiful mountains of Montes de Málaga. The sun is just rising and you hear a cacophony of bird sounds. You roll out of bed and with a cup of coffee in one hand and a pair of binoculars in the other, you spot the first birds in this special place in the midst of nature. For the bird lover the best start of the day, right? And this is only the beginning of your birdwatching trip.

Andalusia is a household name among birdwatchers. It is a diverse and vast area with a large variety of birds. More than enough to see for birdwatchers! Since Finca Serrato is situated in the middle of nature, you will be able to enjoy several special birds around the house during breakfast, such as the bee-eater, Spanish imperial eagle, black wheatear, black starling, blue rock thrush, hoopoe and the crag martin. Daily after breakfast, we will explore different areas of the region to identify many more birds, including raptors, waterfowl and waders. Think monk vulture, European roller, white-headed duck, purple-headed coot and Iberian green woodpecker. In addition, spring migration is in full swing in April. This means that we are facing the swifts that will be in the Netherlands only weeks later, and also all kinds of unexpected species can show up that return from Africa to Europe!

Experience is not necessary; this birding trip is for everyone.

Sander & Marie-Claire

Together Sander & Marie-Claire run Finca Serrato, and they will be your hosts during the birdwatching trip. After having gained the necessary experience in hospitality in the Netherlands and Spain, they realized their dream in February 2021: running a small-scale B&B in the Spanish countryside, combined with offering meals, yoga and Shiatsu massages. Sander and Marie-Claire tremendously enjoy the high quality of life, the tranquillity, and the endless nature and its inhabitants, and find nothing more fun than to share this special feeling with others.

Louis van Oort

We organize Birding Trip Andalusia 2022 in cooperation with Louis van Oort. Louis van Oort is a journalist/editor, author of the book Gewilde Dieren, but above all a passionate birder. He undertook birding expeditions to Siberia and Morocco and acted as a guide for several nature foundations. He is also editor-in-chief of the Hak-al, the magazine of Dutch nature club NVWC, and is on the editorial board of Vlinders, the magazine of the Dutch Butterfly Foundation. Annually during Spring he coordinates a large volunteer team at Beleef de Lente, one of the largest bird webcam projects in the world.

Finca Serrato is a B&B housed in a collection of small buildings over 200 years old, surrounded by olive, almond and fig trees, cacti, wild flowers and herbs. The finca used to be a cortijo and olive press, and over the past centuries the estate has been extended with several other buildings. Also the Moorish influences which are omnipresent in the region of Andalucia are still recognizable in the architecture and interios. The warm colors and mostly natural materials combined with the modern comfort of the apartments will give you an instant holiday feeling. The patio is perfect for cozy long evenings and while floating in the pool you can enjoy unprecedented mountain views. Because the finca is so remote, that is, in the middle of nowhere, you never have to go far to see many special birds. That, as well as the wonderful silence and tranquillity, make this place unique for everyone and especially for nature and bird lovers.
